Standing tall over the Beyoğlu district, Galata Tower impresses not only with its medieval architecture, but also with what lies within. Step inside to explore a museum showcasing its Byzantine origins, Genoese rebuilding, and Ottoman heritage.
Visitors ascend by elevator and winding steps to reach the observation deck, where sweeping views of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn await. Discovering the inside of Galata Tower means experiencing history, culture, and one of Istanbul’s most breathtaking panoramas all in one visit.
Inside Galata Tower: What to See and Experience
Exploring Galata Tower inside is a journey through Istanbul’s layered history and architecture. Beyond the iconic stone walls, visitors will find interactive museum displays, historic reconstructions, and engaging stories that bring the tower’s past to life.
Each floor reveals a different chapter, from Genoese defenses to Ottoman traditions, leading all the way up to the observation deck where the city unfolds in a breathtaking panorama.
Observation Deck
The top of Galata Tower is the ultimate highlight. Reached by elevator to the 6th floor and then a staircase up to the 8th, the circular balcony offers 360° views of Istanbul. From this point, visitors can admire the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, Hagia Sophia, and Topkapı Palace. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical moments to experience from the tower.
Museum & Exhibits
Several middle floors are arranged as museum spaces. On the 5th and 4th floors, visitors will find showcases of artifacts spanning the Neolithic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. One of the most notable objects is the historic Golden Horn chain, once used to protect the city against enemy fleets. The 3rd floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions, ensuring something new to discover throughout the year.
Models & Interactive Displays
The 7th and 6th floors feature engaging exhibits. Highlights include a 1:2500 scale model of Istanbul enhanced with tablets, a maritime display with a 9th-century cargo boat model, and interactive installations for children such as the “Find Istanbul” game. Observation binoculars are also available to explore the skyline in more detail.
Simulations & Legends
On the 2nd floor, a giant screen presents an animated simulation of Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi’s legendary flight from the tower to Üsküdar. While the story belongs to folklore, the immersive display captures the imagination and connects visitors with one of Istanbul’s most enduring tales. Additional panels also recall the time when the tower was used as an observatory.
Souvenir Shop
The 1st floor houses a small museum store where visitors can purchase postcards, replicas of displayed artifacts, miniature Galata Towers, and Istanbul-themed souvenirs. It’s the perfect stop before exiting the tower to take home a memory of your visit.

How Many Steps Are There in Galata Tower?
Galata Tower combines modern access with its medieval character. An elevator takes visitors up to the 6th floor, but from there, the journey continues on foot. To reach the 8th-floor observation deck, you’ll climb around 146 steps via a narrow spiral staircase.
While the staircase can be steep and crowded during peak hours, it adds to the tower’s authentic atmosphere. Visitors with mobility issues should keep in mind that the top levels are not fully accessible, but for most, the climb is manageable and well worth the reward of panoramic views at the summit.
Galata Tower Architecture
The architecture of Galata Tower reflects its medieval Romanesque style, with thick stone walls, narrow windows, and a conical roof that makes it instantly recognizable on Istanbul’s skyline. Originally built in the 6th century and reconstructed by the Genoese in 1348, the tower has stood for over 1,500 years. Inside, visitors can still see arched ceilings, spiral staircases, and structural details that reveal its defensive purpose. Galata Tower’s architecture is both functional and symbolic, representing centuries of cultural influence while continuing to inspire awe among modern visitors.
